The good girls are so boring, but the bad girls are so fun.
It is an interesting look at Quebec just before the fall to the English.
Not as good as Wilkie Collins, but a nice read.

It also has that pattern of endless soliliquizing and flowered speech that appears to me as being one of the more cloying aspects of the true blue Victorian novel.
Kirby appeared to especially have a hardo.

I only read the (300 page) abridged version, something I loathe to do unless it is the official version put out by the new Canadian library.
I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it.
It's hard to get used to Victorian writing, but the story is good and the setting is well realized.
Had to give up on this one.
I love the time period of the story but the author was finished with Chapter 2 and nothing had happened except introductions.
That is the trouble with older books sometimes, the actual story does not start until halfway through the book.
Someday I might try this one again, but now I need more action! The following is not a review.
It's only notes for personal reference

I read the abridged version.

The story only got interesting near the end.

The courtship between the two main characters seemed drawn out and long.

Read in Winter 2010 ↠´ The Golden Dog: Le Chien d'Or ↠´ Don't let the title fool you: The Golden Dog is not about a canine, but a trading post in 18thcentury French Canada.
It begins with true love, happiness, and romance, but ends in murder, treachery, and misery.
No one gets a happy ending.
19th century classic.
read in university and admired it.
Le Chien d'Or was absolutely amazing.
Every word was like poetry.
It isn't an easy read but it is well worth the time.
